Just days before the New Year, my son Zac was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia. What I initially thought was a simple cough and flu turned out to be much more serious.
We visited the hospital for a routine check-up, but the doctors quickly realized Zac was struggling to breathe. I panicked and burst into tears, feeling completely lost and in shock.
Zac was immediately rushed to the emergency room, crying as a crowd of medical staff surrounded him. I couldn't believe what was happening.
The nasal oxygen alone wasn't enough to support his breathing, so the medical team improvised by attaching the nasal oxygen tube to a 6000ml mineral bottle, covering his face to maximize his oxygen intake. They also put him on IV.
It broke my heart to see him in so much pain. If only I could take his place.
Throughout our hospital stay, Zac underwent numerous nebulizer treatments, and I was relieved to see him improve day by day.
Despite the hospital's policy against children, they allowed us to celebrate New Year's Eve with our daughter, bringing a bit of normalcy to our difficult time. Zac was finally discharged two weeks after the holidays. Though it was a challenging year, we remained optimistic.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Gubatan of Gubatan Medical Clinic and all the staff for their exceptional care and support.
