Appointment With a Developmental Pedia

So do not fear, for I am with you: do not be dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

A month ago, we booked an appointment with a developmental pediatrician in Malolos. And the day has come - April 23, 2014.

I'm a little bit worried on how it will turn out. I know for a fact that my son was special but it took me sometime to accept. I was still hoping then that he'll be fine.

I kept on asking God - why me, why my son, and what are His plans. I kept on praying, telling Him to enlighten me.

Last thing I remember, we're already in an old and well-preserved heritage house along Tampoy Street in Malolos, just a few blocks away from Malolos Municipal Hall.

We met Harlene, the secretary. She was so nice and very accommodating.

Playback...

He was referred to us by a doctor on-duty at the Malolos Provincial Hospital, who saw Zac during his anti-rabies vaccine schedule and she noticed that Zac is hyperactive.

I remembered she was hesitant to bring it up, trying not to offend me in anyway. She told us that we might want to consider having him checked. This was the sign I've been waiting for.

Prior to this, I've already been doing a lot of reading and searching about Zac's condition and possible options. I ended up looking for a doctor who specializes in child development and I got tons of results. And I don't know where to go next.

I felt like the doctor was actually God talking to me. That He used this woman to enlighten me.

I did what I had to do and I was able to get the earliest appointment after Holy Week.

Fast forward....

Dr. Herrin asked for his medical history and evaluated Zac through a series of test. The assessment is more of a playtime for kids, but it's actually an intellectual test to see how Zac would respond to instructions.

Finally, the result of the assessment!

Zac's scorecards was tallied and the result shows that his behavior was just half of his age.

And the doctor said he must undergo an occupational therapy for 6 months, and we will get back to him for another evaluation after the therapy to see if there's any improvement.

We've got a lot of work to do. Good thing, this time, I know that I'm on the right track. Wish us luck for more adventure time.

    1. My son is okay and is improving a lot. Thanks for asking! You made the right decision to take your son to Dr. Herrin. My son was 4 when he had his first assessment. Dr. Herrin is nice to kids. Mai-share ko lang, we had an assessment with Dr. Sayo very recently and I was so disappointed. It was sponsored by the school so I grabbed the opportunity to get a second opinion na rin. But to my dismay, one of the staff was rude to my son and parang hindi na-train to deal with kids with disabilities. We waited for hours hanggang sa dumating yung doctor. And it only took us less than 30 minutes to talk to him. Hindi man lang niya kinausap yung anak ko. With Dr. Herrin nman, tatagal ng 1-2 hrs. ang assessment. He will interact with your son. There will be a series of tests and playtime. He will also entertain your questions so don't hesitate to ask. You will be as satisfied as I am, that's for sure! Goodluck sa assessment and I wish your son well. Would you mind if I ask kung taga saan ka? By the way, you can add me on Facebook if you want (fb.com/jhaynetimbol).

    1. Okay naman po. Yung huling assessment po ni Dok Herrin is Williams Syndrome or intellectual disability. Very little chance to send him to regular class kaya sa public SPED center po sya nag-aaral ngayon. It's good to know na matitignan po daughter nyo para na rin mapanatag kayo.
